Meeting with Thoma Holz

The most sophisticated dowel (nail and adhesive-free) cross-laminated timber (CLT) system.

This month, Matthias had the privilege of visiting the Austrian headquarters of Holz100, a building system invented by Erwin Thoma over 20 years ago. Holz100 is one of the few, and from what we have found in our research so far, the most sophisticated dowel (nail and adhesive free) cross laminated timber (CLT) systems. It is our top choice for rebuilding our home because of its extraordinary healthy, cradle to cradle, fire resistant and earthquake safe properties. It is approved in Europe and Japan, but not yet in the United States. There was a home built in Walnut Creek, CA with the system, but so far, we can’t find the permit records. So it will be a process that will cost us time and money to go through the permit hoops. But we really love it, and we are trying to team up with the company to move forward. When the Dutch city of Venlo decided to become the world’s first region to fully adopt Cradle to Cradle (C2C) principles, it seemed only fitting that their city hall be a beacon for sustainability. Designed by Kraaijvanger Architects. Behind 21,500-square-foot living wall you find a 11 floor Thoma structure.  (more information & video)
